How much is too much?

That’s right. Today we’re talking about cosmetics. No, I’m not going to give you beauty tips. I’m going to talk about Christianity and makeup. Some people seem to think they don’t jive. Well, I disagree … to a certain extent. So here are my thoughts – and my advice – to you.

As girls, we want to look our best. We like to be pretty. Makeup can definitely enhance our natural beauty … or cover up anything you don’t think is beautiful. We also want to feel safe. Makeup can give you security. We want to be accepted. Makeup is definitely popular nowadays.

This isn’t going to be another post about you being beautiful on the inside. Being beautiful on the inside is what counts – but that’s not what this post is about. This post is about makeup.

I think I was about twelve when I started wearing cosmetics of any kind (except for costumes or when my big sisters put it on me). Of course, I only wore something to cover up that nasty acne (which was almost nonexistent then … *sigh*) and some lip gloss. I only bothered to put it on for special occasions.

Now? You won’t see me go a day without putting on my mascara and cover up if not more. Now, that’s not a lot, I know … but it’s every day no matter what and I don’t feel put-together until I put it on.

Here’s what I look like in the morning before and after makeup:

beforeandafter

It’s a bit of a difference … but it’s not a lot. I argue that, after some of the sleep got washed off of me, I wouldn’t look too bad without makeup.

So why do I feel like I need to wear it? Do I wear it for other people? No, I don’t think so. I’m not aching to attract a boy (my friends will affirm this … *apologizes to a lot of boys for being mean to them as kids*), my family knows what I look like without makeup, and most of my friends don’t wear makeup anyway.

So that must mean I wear it for myself. Because it makes me feel good. But in the Bible it says …

“Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.”

“Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”

We’re obviously not supposed to be too focused on outward beauty, then, right? Which means we shouldn’t wear makeup … right?

Well, to be honest, I don’t think the act of wearing makeup is wrong. I think you can wear any amount of makeup and still be a godly woman.

What matters is why.

Here are some bad reasons to wear makeup.

You Probably Shouldn’t Wear Makeup …

  • To attract boys. Look, you can’t wear that stuff for the rest of your life! 😉 Seriously, though, if you can’t attract him without makeup – without a face, for that matter – then he’s not worth it. Trust me. Whether or not you wear makeup in this case is totally irrelevant. (Not that you should remove all your makeup every time you meet a guy. That would be a hassle. Just that that shouldn’t be your reason for wearing it.)
  • To attract friends. Again, anyone who cares about how you look isn’t worth your time. You are a special, unique person, created by God for His glory, and you don’t need to be involved in any kind of meaningful relationship with anyone who judges you based on how you look.
  • To be beautiful. Hooooold it there, why else would you wear makeup? Well, I have some pretty good reasons, but first let me explain why this is a reason not to wear makeup. You already all beautiful! I thought we established this fact already. There’s no need to add a bunch of gunk onto your face. Cosmetics can’t make you beautiful. They can add to your natural beauty … or they can erase the true you and replace her with someone else, depending on how you use them. But they can’t make you beautiful.

Now that we’ve gotten through those, let’s move on to some good reasons for wearing makeup.

You Should Wear Makeup …

  • To dress up. Makeup is no different than a fancy dress and a new pair of shoes! You wear nice clothes to church, right? Then wear makeup to church, too, if you choose to! So wear makeup because you want to ‘dress up’ nicely.
  • To glorify God. Say what? That’s right! As I said before, wearing makeup is no different than putting on nice clothes … and if you can put on nice clothes to glorify God (which I really think you can), then you can put on makeup to glorify God. You are His perfect creation, and you represent Him. Look your best!
  • To have fun. You gotta admit, putting makeup on is fun!

So is wearing makeup wrong? Not at all! However, you can wear makeup for the wrong reasons. So take a peek inside your heart. Why do you wear makeup? Is it really for the right reasons, and are you really honoring God by doing so?

Let’s go back to the title question.

How much is too much?

There is no such thing! Wear as much makeup as you want to wear. Just remember that, as a Christian, you are representing God, so …

  • Don’t call unnecessary attention to yourself. Leave that to the movie stars and models. 😉
  • Don’t make yourself look garish or ridiculous. Remember that makeup is to enhance your natural beauty … not to make a whole new you!
  • Let God be your guide. If you feel like makeup is going to call attention away from what is important – namely glorifying God – then don’t wear it! Use your conscience. 🙂

Before I go, a quick disclaimer:

It’s not just up to you.

Your parents get to make the final decision as to whether you wear makeup or not and how much makeup you wear. Remember to respect their opinions. They probably have a good reason for their decisions. If you want more makeup privileges, try bringing it up to them in a respectful manner. 🙂

Thanks for reading,

  1. Reblogged this on Reveries and commented:

I wrote another post for Send the Light, a Christian blog I co-author on … this time on a somewhat different subject than what I’m used to … makeup.

What? Makeup can be a very tricky subject for Christian girls! It really can! 😛

  2. I wear make-up, but I hav an odd case.
My mom says that it looks pretty, and that there’s nothing wrong with wearing make-up, if you DO wear it wisely. I wear make-up (like mascara, nothing really more I think is necessary… or, WAS.) mostly to make the TERRIBLE acne fade into the horizon. My mom shows me how to apply the make-up to make it look nice, especially with foundation, which I only use when the acne just looks like gopher holes ALL OVER MY FACE!!! I mean, if it’s church, I’ll use a little bit of eyeshadow. I naturally have very vibrant lips, so (unlike my mom) I never really use lip gloss and just skip to the stuff that makes it a bit shinier. I don’t know, that doesn’t make sense. XD But then again, I hardly use that stuff, since it’s mom’s. Out of the makeup I own, I really only wear the mascara and foundation on my gopher hole days. 😉

However, my little sister, who’s ten, has noticed me weraing makeup. And though she denies it, I DO see the eyeshadow and mascara she’s wearing. And THAT I don’t think is “good” because I mean, she’s TEN! She’s beautiful, NO ACNE, long eyelashes, and STUNNING tan skin! I know she looks up to me, but I really wish she’s enjoy her NATURAL beauty before acne and stuff comes.

    1. I know what you mean about the acne! Some days are better than others, though, right? 😉 Yeah, my parents are perfectly all right with me wearing makeup, too … I honestly don’t know if there are any limits as to how much I can wear or not … I don’t wear a ton as it is. 😛
Yeah, ten is pretty young to wear makeup in my opinion … seems to me like you’d just mess it up then, y’know?

      1. Yes, hahaha!!! Exactly! People are like, “Kid, there’s acne on your face. There always will be.” And I’m like, “NO! It’s worse today than last week!” or something!

Yes, I agree completely. She’s actually really good at it. She’s a perfectionist, and she’s watched me do my makeup A LOT. 😉

      2. I’m hoping it will fade when I grow up. Honestly, though, I think it’s a little better than it was last year! Or maybe I’ve just gotten better with makeup … I don’t know … 😉
Really? That’s interesting. Maybe she’s gonna be a professional cosmetologist (or whatever that word is) when she grows up. 😛

      3. Same here. I’m twelve, so naturally, it’s getting worse. I mean, in your picture, that’s NOTHING compared to mine. I mean, it’s only on my forehead, but still.
Actually, that’s what she wants to do. That, or be a hair stylist.

      4. I think the light was being favorable to me that day … but yeah, I bet yours will clear up some in a couple years. And mine will hopefully get a better …
I think sometimes cosmetology can include hair-styling, so maybe she can do both. 😉

  3. Hey Kellyn! Great post. I only wear make-up for special occasions (like Christmas or performances). I would say I wear a moderate amount when I do. More then just concealer and mascara but nothing crazy or over the top. My parent’s don’t let me wear it on a daily basis but that’s ok with me. When we decide the time is right I’m not sure if I’ll want to start wearing make-up. I really like playing around and experimenting with it but I don’t want to get so used to wearing make-up that I don’t feel as pretty with out it on. It can be really frustrating when my friends are so afraid to go without make-up because they don’t want to look bad or they don’t see that they are beautiful without make up and they are more than just appearances. Sorry, that was kind of a long rant 🙂
For now, I’m comfortable with where I’m at and I know that true beauty isn’t in outward appearances. God loves us no matter what.

  4. I don’t wear makeup of any kind, and I don’t see the need to use any kind. (Probably because my mom doesn’t use any, and doesn’t see any reason to) I do understand why you’d want to cover up acne, or any other marks on your face. However, I choose to use apple cider vinegar and coconut oil soap to actually cure acne, and not just cover it up. Makeup clogs pores, and actually hurts the skin, (some kinds… not all, but I can never tell the difference) as my mom would explain. It also takes up a lot of time in the morning. 😀

P.S. Kellyn, I think you look perfectly fine and beautiful in your ‘before’ photo!

    1. For me, it’s mostly for fun and … I don’t know! I don’t think I have another reason.
(And yes, I agree with you! I meant to say that I thought so, too … but I guess I forgot to! I keep forgetting to say things in my blog posts …)

  5. I’m not allowed to wear makeup and I’m kind of glad. I notice that some girls try to make themselves look pretty for guys or cover up who they are. (I like guys (guilty of that 😛 )as much as the next person, but seriously?)
For me, life feels easier without having to worry about using makeup daily. Though, I admit, there are times where I wished I had makeup to cover up my face when I have zits that look so awful and bug me. 😉

    1. I only wear a little makeup. I have actually had panic attacks that someday I’ll meet the guy I want to marry … and we’ll get married … and then he won’t recognize without my makeup. So there are days when I’ll click back and forth between “before and after” photos I took and be like, “If I were a boy would I recognize me???” 😛 But I’m too young to think about getting married, I suppose. At least in a serious, I’m-ready-to-get-married-now way, definitely!
I guess that could be true. It only takes me a couple minutes to put on makeup every day, but I suppose technically it is something I have to worry about … so I don’t know.

  6. Yes girl! Sometimes I feel like I need to wear makeup just because other girls my age (heck, even girls younger than me) wear it. But even when I do wear makeup I just wear mascara, eyeshadow and blush. Nothing extreme :).

    1. I wear it almost every day (I think I already said that), but I just wear mascara and foundation/coverup. My mom thinks I need to wear blush (I have very pale skin), so I do that sometimes, too … but I honestly don’t wear a ton. I don’t see anything wrong with wearing makeup as long as you’re doing it for the right reasons … but I just prefer less. I am a little worried about myself wearing it every day, though. :/

      1. I think you’re beautiful, BTW, and I love your little freckles in the before picture! I actually wish I could have some foundation and concealer when I have a bad acne day. But I’ve found that wearing a little bit of mascara and blush makes it less noticeable.

      2. Thank you! I would compliment you back, but I don’t remember what you look like. *sneaks over to your blog* Yes, you’re pretty. *is awkward* I love that dress you’re wearing, though! It’s such a gorgeous shade of purple/magenta! Yes, that’s definitely true.

  7. Thanks for a nice article! To add to what you said: if you have a job in an office or something of the sort, makeup can be needed to portray a more professional appearance. Adding a bit of mascara can eliminate a tired appearance, and lots of times looking perpetually tired is not good for your job!

Personally, I use Bare Minerals blush, eye shadow, and sometimes their “mineral veil” powder…great for sensitive skin, and doesn’t clog pores…along with Estée Lauder concealer (yeah, it’s expensive, but one tube lasts for YEARS) and Cover Girl waterproof mascara.

  8. Ah yeah!!!!!! I totallyagree with everything you said kell!!! Makeups awesome haha!;) lets see I wear makeup for church and sometime when I go to town, I used to wear it all the time back when I was first allowed to wear it(i was 14) but around 15 I did a “no makeup for day dare” with some friends and wow it was so releiving!! To not have to put it on every day and I just kinda broke out of the bonds of makeup (ahem lol;) so I stopped using it all the time lol and now yeah I dont waer it often. I think its cause im lazy(!!!!!) Like srsly im not kidding how lamesause am i! Anyhoo when I do wear it I waer powder(my face rejects foundation);) and mascara and I feel like thats not it but thats it;)
But sadly I am one of those girls that puts makeup on to be beutiful and look good and attract people:( I justlook awful without it ya know!

    1. I ended up looking like a goblin, you mean. 😛 Seriously, though, it wasn’t all bad. But, no, you don’t look bad with makeup! You just think you don’t. You’re actually really pretty. Like, seriously. Not just saying that. And you know I wouldn’t lie to you because … I am painful with the truth. *wields truth like a method of torture* But yeah. 😛

  9. I don’t wear makeup…part of me is just like “I can be beautiful without the make up so ha! I won’t wear it!” There are other reasons for it too (like that I, you know, like to be able to rub my eyes and cry when I want to), but it’s probably mainly just defiance. I won’t even put it on for special occasions or dates…which I think might be a good thing. I mean, like you said, we dress up and wear our best for Sunday and do our hair all nice, yet I still refuse to do any makeup. So am I not glorifying God by doing that? I don’t know, but I don’t want to change… 😛

Anyway, this was a great post, Kell! I really liked the interesting premise and it was engaging and fun to read. Good job. 🙂

  11. YES. #truth
When I turned 13 my mom got me some makeup and I started wearing it pretty consistently. And more recently, I finally got the hang of mascara and have been wearing it too. And I have to say – I really like makeup! It’s fun to put on and kinda smooths everything over, as my mom likes to say. And like you said, you are glorifying God through your body that He gave you.
I have a friend who is ant-makeup and seems to think that it’s bad to wear it, but I loved reading your opinion on it, which is the same as mine.
    Thanks for this, Kellyn! 😀

    1. Makeup definitely is fun and it does smooth everything over! I don’t really understand why some people are against it – though it’s up to them whether or not to wear makeup, of course! – but I suppose if it’s causing them to ‘stumble,’ then we shouldn’t bother them or try to convince them otherwise. But yes, some of my friends don’t believe you should wear makeup.
